Ellipse is the second generation of IPL, using the safest and most advanced technology for permanent hair reduction. The unique dual mode filtering system means it is safe and gentle on the skin, and the large-sized glass prism means treatment of hair removal is faster and more effective for larger areas, putting this treatment in a class of its own.

Sally Azzopardi, owner of Refine Skin + Laser, has been using IPL for laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation for more than 15 years and holds an accredited certificate in IPL and laser – so you can be sure you’re in safe hands.

  • Light from a hand held flash lamp is converted into heat and applied to the hair follicle, which is then destroyed and rendered unable to produce new hair growth.

To ensure optimal light transmission to the hair, a thin layer of gel (similar to that used in ultrasound) is applied to the skin, while the applicator is moved over the treatment area exactly one width after each flash of light.

  • As the treatment relies on absorption of light in the hair pigment (melanin) the most effective results are seen by those with darker hair against fairer skin. However, the unique software of the Ellipse system is pre-programmed to treat all different hair and skin colour combinations.

  • The glass prism Ellipse applicator is 1cm by 5cm, so a large number of hairs are targeted in each flash of light. A facial treatment will take around 20 minutes, whereas the back or legs can take 60 – 120 minutes.

  • No anaesthetics are required, and most clients describe the sensation as similar to that of a rubber band snapping onto the skin. Skin may feel warm and tingly after treatment.

  • The visible light is completely safe and no special precautions are needed. It is important, however, not to remove hair by epilation or waxing for four weeks prior to treatment to ensure that as many hair follicles as possible contain a hair.

It is also important to avoid sun tanning before and during treatment sessions, otherwise the skin will also absorb the light and heat, making treatment less effective.

Generally, no post-treatment is necessary but clients with very sensitive skin may benefit from applying a soothing cream for a few days. We also recommended limiting sun exposure and using sunscreen (SPF 20+) for several weeks following treatment.

  • Hair growth is cyclical, with rest and growth phases, and only follicles in the growth phase contain hair that can be destroyed by heat. Resting hair follicles need to enter the growth phase before they can be destroyed by the Ellipse treatment. It is necessary to repeat the treatment at intervals until all hair follicles have been through the growth phase.

The length and timing of the growth cycles are affected by numerous factors, such as body site, hair density, thickness, ethnic origin, hormonal status and age. Usually eight to twelve treatments are needed, and the interval between treatments is typically one to three months.

  • Treatment costs vary between individuals depending on the area being treated and the number of treatments required. Prices will be discussed at initial consultation.
